Our Feathered Friends

Dingo students playing with baby chicks; Popcorn, Chirpy Tiger and Chicken Little.

During term three, the K/P/1 class incubated some eggs. After an unsuccessful attempt the first time and some serious disappointment, we tried again... With the support and interest of the whole school community, we finally became proud parents to three furry chicks. Popcorn, Chirpy Tiger and Chicken Little.

We later had five more chickens donated from a local family and all eight are very healthy. The chickens receive lots of love on a daily basis. Students, ensuring they always have food and fresh water, care for them. All sorts of oversized vegies, yummy fruit and creepy crawlies are being brought in especially for the chickens.

The feeders, waterers, laying boxes, mini playground and roost were all made by the 5/6 students during Technology and the chickens love them!

"They are easy to pick up when they are sitting on the roost" Hannah, year 1

"I like them because they are fluffy" Karmen and Brook, Kindy

"I love holding them and making things for them" Alex, Prep

"There's more activities to do with the chickens" Raph, year 3

"I liked watching them hatch!" Ollie, year 1

"It's an opportunity for us all to learn about how chickens grow" Ant, year 5

UPDATE: 20/04/19

Students were delighted to find the chickens have laid their first egg today. It was discovered when some students went to check on the chicken's food and water at second lunch. We are all very egg-cited for the K/P/1 class.
